A Door Two Streets Away

This message is for a door slamming two streets away and a body that had already emptied before you heard it

It is half past six on a Tuesday and Tess is at the sink with her hands in the water.

The radio is on low, the way it always is, some presenter being cheerful about traffic. There is a plate in her left hand and a cloth in her right. The window over the sink is open two inches because the kitchen steams up, and through it comes the ordinary evening: a bin lid, somebody's television, a bird arguing on the fence.

And then, two streets away, somebody shuts a car door hard.

Here is the thing she cannot explain to anybody. She was already gone before the sound had finished arriving. Not frightened, exactly. Emptied. Something dropped straight through the middle of her, the water went a long way off, her hands went cold in the warm water, and her heart came up into her ears like a hand over a microphone.

There is no thought in any of it. That is the part nobody understands. There is no picture, no memory, no sentence. Her body simply files the sound and acts, and the thinking arrives afterwards, late, out of breath, trying to catch up with a decision that has already been taken somewhere below her ribs.

She stands very still. She is holding a plate.

After a while the water has gone lukewarm and the presenter is still being cheerful and Tess is still standing there, and then the second thing arrives, which is the one that actually does the damage. She is furious with herself. It was a door. Somebody two streets away shut a door on a Tuesday evening. She is forty-four years old, standing in her own kitchen, apologizing to nobody, with wet hands.

She will not mention it to anyone. She has thought about how that sentence would start and it does not start. There is no way to say it out loud in daylight that does not sound ridiculous, and nothing on earth would be worse than watching somebody's face while they decided how to be kind about it.

She puts the plate on the rack and carries on, and nobody in her life knows this happens twice a week.

And here is where I stop talking about Tess, because you have your own sound.

Maybe it is not a door. A chair scraping in a room above. A certain tone of voice coming through a wall. Keys landing on a hard surface. The particular pitch of a car braking. Whatever it is, it goes off in your body before your mind gets a vote, and by the time you have the thought, the thought is late.

So before we go one line further, two things.

I am not going to ask you what it was. Not here, not once, not in a single sentence of this. You do not have to produce it, date it, explain it or say it out loud to be met right here, and anyone who told you peace starts with a full account was mistaken.

And this is not a failure of faith. A body that learned a sound is not a soul that failed to trust. Nobody is disappointed in you at the sink.

A Door Two Streets Away

David wrote down what a body does

Psalm 31 is a prayer from inside pressure, and it does something in the middle that we tend to read straight past.

It stops praying about the situation and takes an inventory of a body.

Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and body with grief. My life is consumed by anguish and my years by groaning; my strength fails because of my affliction, and my bones grow weak.Psalm 31:9-10

Read the list itself. Eyes. Soul. Body. Bones. Strength. None of those is a poetic flourish. That is a man describing eyes that will not focus, a gut that has dropped, bones that ache and arms with no strength in them, and describing it to God while it is still happening.

Now notice the thing that is missing, because it is the whole reason we are in this psalm and not another one. There is no apology anywhere in it. He does not explain his body. He does not defend it, diagnose it, minimize it, or ask forgiveness for it. Not one line says he knows he should be over this by now. He reports what is happening in his own frame and keeps talking, and God does not interrupt to correct him.

And then this went into the songbook. Somebody set those words to music, and a congregation of ordinary people stood up and sang them out loud together. A body in that condition was not filed away as a private embarrassment. It was scored, and rehearsed, and sung in public worship, which is the plainest possible statement about where God thinks it belongs.

So hear this as it is written, not as we have been trained to shrink it. You are not the exception in the room. You are not the one who slipped in with a body too unreliable to be here, because the written word put a shaking, hollowed out, weak boned person at the front of the singing, and it is His Spirit, not your steadiness, who holds you in the room while your hands are still cold.

Two ordinary things belong here and I will say them plainly. There are people whose actual work is helping a body unlearn a sound, and going to see one of them is a good and normal thing, like seeing a doctor about a knee that gives way. If medicine is part of how you are being cared for, that is care, not compromise, and nothing here is a reason to change it. God gives good gifts and some of them keep office hours.

And nobody gets to attach a condition to your peace. Not once you have forgiven. Not once you have processed it. Not once you can talk about it without your voice going. Whatever forgiveness turns out to look like for you is between you and God, on His timing, and it is not a gate standing in front of tonight. Peace is not kept behind a door you have to open first. You have been carrying a condition nobody in Scripture ever put on you, and the same Spirit who breathed Psalm 31 into a hymnbook is not standing at your kitchen door with a clipboard.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is not a technique for stopping the jolt, because that is not mine to hand out and you would know if I were bluffing.

It is this. Your body is not the enemy in this kitchen. It is doing precisely what it was built to do, at high speed, on old information. It learned a sound once in order to keep you alive, and it has gone on standing that post ever since, faithfully, badly, without ever being told the situation has changed. That is not betrayal. That is a loyal thing running out of date orders, and Psalm 31 hands it words instead of blame, and His Spirit is the one bringing an old song into a room with a sink in it.

So take this in your hands: the day that taught your body that sound does not own this evening. You are here now, in a room with a fence and a bird and a lukewarm plate, and in Christ, by His Spirit living in you, you have the standing to say so out loud in your own kitchen. Not to make yourself feel better. Because it is true, it is written, and it holds whether the jolt comes again on Thursday or not.

You are not broken, and you are not behind. The keeping in that psalm never once depended on the person being steady, and His word does not have a version of that promise reserved for people whose hands do not shake.

And one plain thing, said calmly, before we go on. If tonight has gone further than the jolt, as far as not wanting to be here at all, tell one human being before morning: a doctor, a crisis line where you live, or one person who will sit with you. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour, and you do not have to explain anything to use it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, sitting down, in your own voice and at your own speed. The right to speak like this is not something a steady week earns you and not something a bad evening takes back: it is yours in Christ, given rather than achieved, resting on His word and carried by His Spirit, and exercised in His Name. And it sits under Him, however He answers and whatever tomorrow sounds like, because the outcome is His and He has never once needed your hands to be still first.

  1. Door two streets away, you are a door and you are not the day you remind me of. Psalm 31 put a hollowed out body straight into the songbook, so what happened in my hands just now is not a secret and it was never a disgrace.
  2. Voice that calls me ridiculous for a door, get out of this kitchen. In the name of Jesus I put my hands back on the arms of this chair, and the God who has never once asked me what it was is the God sitting with me in this room right now.
  3. Lord, You are here in the room my hands are actually touching, and Your word never made being over it the price of Your company. Your Spirit is carrying an old psalm into a kitchen at half past six, and I am breathing out longer than I breathe in. This evening is Yours, and I am staying in it.
