The tea went cold about two hours ago and there is a skin on it.
He is on the couch with one leg under him. The lamp is off, so the only light in the room is the screen, and the screen has finished another episode and is counting itself down into the next one, and he lets it. He is not watching. He stopped watching somewhere around the second one. He is waiting.
He is waiting to be tired enough.
Not sleepy. Sleepy came and went at half past eleven and he let it go on purpose, because he knows what happens if he goes up sleepy. He lies there in the dark, the day starts replaying, and then comes a stretch of a few minutes with nothing in it, and that stretch is the door. So he does not use it anymore. He waits until his body quits, until the room tilts and there is no gap left at all between awake and gone.
Twenty to two. The heating clicked off a long time ago. His phone is at four percent on the arm of the couch and he is not going to plug it in, because getting up to plug it in is the kind of thing that wakes a person back up.
He has been doing this since the spring.
He calls it being a night owl. He said that to somebody at work, cheerfully, and they laughed and said they were the same, and he laughed too, and it is not the same, and he knows it is not the same.
The truth is he has not gone to bed in months. He has collapsed onto it. There is a difference, and it costs about three hours a night, and everybody around him thinks he is just busy.
At some point he will not remember, the room goes sideways and the couch takes him, and he wakes at four with the remote on the floor and one arm dead under him, and the standby light glowing in the corner like a small red eye that stayed up with him.
That is you.
Maybe it is not the couch. Maybe it is the kitchen, or work you invent for yourself, or a phone held over your face until it drops on your chin. But you know the arrangement, and you know what it is protecting, and you have never said it out loud in daylight.
Let me put one thing down before anything else, and put it down heavily.
This is not a failure of faith. Nobody in heaven is disappointed in you at twenty to two. What you are doing is what a frightened, sensible person does with a problem nobody offered to help with, and God has never treated it as a fault. Neither will I.

The verse is about the ten minutes
Everything I have for you tonight sits in one line of Proverbs, and the important half is the half nobody quotes.
When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.Proverbs 3:24
Listen to where it starts. Not when thou art asleep. Not in the morning. When thou liest down.
The verse opens on the exact stretch of time this whole arrangement was built to skip. The lying down. The gap.
So hear what that means, because it is not what a season of couches has taught you. You are not being handed a promise about the eight hours. You are handed something about the ten minutes, and the ten minutes are the part you were guarding. That is written in Proverbs 3:24, and it is His Spirit, not this voice, who lays a line that old across a couch at twenty to two.
And notice the word He chose. Sweet. Not adequate. Not survived. He put a word that belongs to bread and honey on the very thing this arrangement avoids, and He put it in a book of plain practical advice, among sentences about lending and keeping your word.
That is what I want under your body tonight. You have not been handed a spirit of fear at the moment your head goes down. You have been handed a lying down that His word calls sweet, and it is not a reward for a brave night. His Spirit is the one who carries a promise like that into a dark room and makes it hold weight.
Now let me say what your arrangement actually is, because it is not cowardice and it is not sin. It is engineering. You worked out that the gap is where it gets in, so you removed the gap. You stopped going to bed and started falling over instead.
And it worked. That is the honest part, and nobody says it out loud: dropping works, for a while. The cost is that you have not lain down on purpose in a very long time, and the word names the lying down and not the falling over. So the promise you have been sleeping straight past is the one written for the exact minutes you keep skipping, and His Spirit is in them.
Now hear what I am not going to do. I am not going to tell you what your dreams mean. Nobody here weighs a nightmare for a message or hands you a meaning to carry around. A dream is not a memo. God speaks in His word and by His Spirit, plainly, to people who are awake, and He has never needed you frightened in order to say something.
And I am not handing you a procedure. There is no correct wording and no step that voids it if you forget. Words are not spells. If any of this starts to feel like a technique that has to be done right or it fails, we have wandered off the ground this message stands on. Your nights turn on who is in the room.
And nothing here touches your care. Sleep is medical as well as spiritual. If a doctor is helping you, keep going to them. If there is medication, keep taking it exactly as prescribed, and never change a dose over anything anybody says anywhere, including me. That help is provision, and God is entirely inside it.
Let me name the lonely part, because it is not the dreams. It is that nobody knows. A grown adult cannot easily say at work that they are frightened of going to bed, so the tiredness gets explained as the job, or the kids, and the real reason sits underneath, unsaid, for months.
You are not the only one running this arrangement. Proverbs 3 was written down for people with every ordinary reason to be afraid after dark, and the same Spirit who put that promise in writing has not gone quiet since.
So here is the turn, and it is smaller than it sounds, and it happens lying down.
You are not going to be asked to be brave in the gap. You are going to be told the truth about who else is in it. Those ten minutes are not an unguarded corridor between two safe places. They are covered, they were covered long before you started staying up, and Proverbs 3:24 has been standing over them the whole time with His Spirit holding it there.
That is not a technique and it is not a test. Nobody is timing how long it takes you to fall asleep tonight. You have permission to lie down while still afraid, because Proverbs 3:24 never says the fear has to go first. It puts the promise on the lying down, not on your composure, and the Holy Spirit makes an old line like that true in a dark room.
That gap does not get your nights. It does not get another season of the couch and the standby light and a story about being a night owl.
And one plain thing before we go on. If your own thoughts have gone as far as not being here at all, tell one human being today. In the United States, call or text 988 at any hour. Anywhere else, your local emergency number or crisis line, and one person who will come and sit with you. That is wisdom, and God is entirely in it.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud if you can, and if you cannot, let them be spoken over you and simply agree. Keep your eyes closed. The authority in them is not yours by nature: it is Christ's, and in Christ it is yours, given to you and never earned by a good night. His word is what they stand on and His Spirit is what carries them, and how soon your nights change is His to decide.
- Gap between awake and asleep, you are covered ground. Proverbs says that when I lie down I am not afraid and my sleep is sweet, and that was written over these ten minutes and not over the eight hours. In the name of Jesus you do not get one more night of me staying up until I drop.
- Fear that calls me the watchman here, go back where you came from. The Lord who keeps me does not slumber and does not sleep, and His Spirit is awake in this room, so the watch was never mine and this house was never unwatched. I am off duty, and I am going up while I can still feel my feet.
- Father, You said that when I lie down I am not afraid, and You put the word sweet on my sleep long before I ever met a night like this one. Your Spirit is in this room and Your word is under my hand, and the whole watch is Yours. I am lying down now, and my sleep is Yours to keep.
