Nameless DreadPsalm 121:8

A Road You Have Driven A Thousand Times

This message is for the certainty that something is badly wrong, arriving on a road you have driven a thousand times

Ten to six on a Thursday, and she is eleven minutes from her own driveway.

It is the road she has taken home for fourteen years. Past the grain elevator. Past the place where the county stopped repaving and the tar goes rough for a hundred yards. Past the row of poplars that somebody's grandfather planted in a line so straight it still looks deliberate in November. She could drive it asleep. Some evenings she suspects she has.

The groceries are in the back and one bag has gone over, because it always goes over at the bend, and there is an orange somewhere under the passenger seat now that she will find on Saturday.

And then, at the bend, the way it has come for six weeks, it arrives.

Not a thought. There is nothing thought about it. It is a physical certainty, arriving whole, in the chest first and then everywhere, that something is badly wrong. Not going wrong. Wrong already, somewhere, and she is the last to know.

She puts the turn signal on for no reason, pulls onto the gravel, and sits with the engine off and the ticking under the hood and her hands still at ten and two.

Then she runs the checks, because she has a system now. Husband: texted at four about the water filter, three exclamation marks, entirely himself. Daughter: posted a photo of somebody else's cat forty minutes ago. Mom: wants the casserole dish back. Nobody has called. The house is not on fire, the car is fine, work is fine, and her own body, as far as she knows, is fine.

Everything is fine and the feeling does not move.

That is the part she cannot hand to anybody. If a thing had actually happened she would have something to give people. She could say the word and watch their faces change and be held for a minute. But nothing has happened, so what she has is a Thursday, a bag of groceries, and a certainty with no address on it, and the only sentence available to her is that she is fine, which is even true.

So she sits on the shoulder for four minutes with the poplars going gold off her left shoulder, and then she puts it in drive, because the milk is in the back, and she comes home, and she says the day was fine.

That is you, on the road you could drive with your eyes shut.

And before anything else is said, hear this. What arrives at that bend is not a failure of faith, and it is not God trying to warn you about something. Dread that comes without an object is not a coded message you have failed to open. Nothing you did earned it, nothing you neglected invited it, and nobody in heaven thinks less of you for the four minutes on the gravel.

A Road You Have Driven A Thousand Times

Nothing has to be named for the keeping to hold

There is a short psalm that gets sung at funerals and printed on graduation cards, and it was written for a road.

The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.Psalm 121:8

It is one of the songs of ascent: a walking song, sung by ordinary people on a route with hills on both sides, and in that country the hills were exactly where the trouble came from.

And here is the thing about it that matters most tonight. It never names the trouble. Not once. It does not identify a threat, it does not diagnose a danger, and it never turns to the walker and asks what they are so afraid of. It names a Keeper instead. The verb runs through the psalm six times, and it is the word for a watchman on a wall: to guard, to keep, to stay awake over.

So hear it where you are sitting. You are kept without having to say what from. That is the actual shape of the promise, and Psalm 121 never requires you to produce an object for your fear before the keeping applies, and His Spirit is not standing at a window waiting for you to name something before He will watch the road.

Look at what it says He keeps, too. Not your victories. Not the crisis. Your going out and your coming in, which is the Hebrew way of saying the whole ordinary shape of a life, both ends of every journey and every mile in between. You have been kept on that road for fourteen years, on drives you have long since forgotten, and the keeping is written and His Spirit has been the one honoring it every time.

So put this down, because it has been costing you more than the dread has. You are not required to work out what this is about. There is no hidden reason you have to uncover before peace is allowed in the car, and a dread with no name is not a locked door you have failed to find the key to. What is written is a promise about a Person, not a puzzle about a cause, and the Holy Spirit does not hold back His keeping until you have identified something.

And take the ordinary help, all of it. If a body is doing this at the same bend every week, that is worth saying out loud to a doctor and worth saying to a counselor, and neither one is a step down from trusting God. Keep taking whatever is on your shelf, exactly as your doctor said, and never change it because of something read on a screen, this included.

Now the lonely part, which is not the dread at all. It is that there is nothing to tell. You have carried this for six weeks with no sentence to hand anybody, because "nothing is wrong and I am frightened" is a thing people do not know what to do with, so you go in and you say the day was fine. Hear it plainly: you are not exaggerating and you are not inventing it. Psalm 121:3 says the One who keeps you does not slumber, and His Spirit was in that car on the gravel with you for all four of those minutes, and He needed no explanation from you to be there.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it happens on the gravel, engine off, with nothing explained.

You are not going to solve this one, and the relief hiding in that sentence is most of the message. A dread with no object cannot be answered with an answer, and it never was going to be. What is written hands you something better than an explanation: a Keeper, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes that real in a stopped car on a county road.

Peace is not on the far side of understanding this. It is already yours, right there on the shoulder, unexplained. God says He keeps your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and His word carries no small print underneath it about naming the thing first. And it is not your composure holding any of this in place. It is His Spirit, carrying what He has already said into a car with the engine off. And you have already come in a thousand times. The Keeper written about in that psalm is the reason, on the drives you remember and on all the ones you do not, and His Spirit has not been asleep on a single one of them.

One thing said plainly, because it matters more than anything else here. If the dread has gone past dread and into thoughts of not being here at all, tell one human being today. In the United States you can call or text 988, at any hour. Anywhere else, your local emergency number or crisis line, and one person who will stay on the phone with you. That is not weak faith. It is wisdom, and God is in it.

Then pull back onto the road.

Declare this over yourself

Speak them where you sit, out loud if the windows are up and under your breath if they are not, and if no voice comes, let them be said over you and simply agree. The authority in them is not something you generate at a bend in a county road: it is Christ's, and in Christ it is yours, given to you and never earned by a calm week. The words do nothing on their own. It is the Holy Spirit who carries what is written, and how this lifts, and when, is His to decide.

  1. Bend after the poplars, you are a curve in a county road and nothing else. God says He keeps my going out and my coming in, so you have no announcement to make in my chest and no news about my family. I am putting my hands back on the wheel of a car that is being kept, and I am driving home.
  2. Certainty that I am the one it is coming for, you have no evidence and no warrant in this car. In the name of Jesus I put you out, and I put you out on the ground of what is written: the One who keeps me does not slumber and does not sleep. Peace, you belong on this seat, and I am opening my hands to you now.
  3. Lord, You have kept my going out and my coming in on a thousand drives I never noticed, and You are keeping this one. Your Spirit is in this car with me and Your word says the keeping runs from this time forth and forevermore, so there is nothing in this evening that You are not already inside. I am turning the key and driving home, and I am going home kept.
