Nameless DreadIsaiah 41:10

Sunday Evening, Nothing On The Calendar

This message is for the dread that arrives every Sunday evening with nothing on the calendar to explain it

The light on the wall above the radiator goes from honey to gray in about eleven minutes. She knows, because she has watched it do it.

Sunday. Twenty to seven.

The ironing board is still up in the corner with two shirts done and one to go. The washing machine finished its cycle forty minutes ago and played its little tune, and the clothes are still in there, creasing. Through the wall she can hear next door's radio, and under it somebody frying onions, which is the smell of a house where the evening is going fine.

Her phone is on the arm of the chair, face up, showing nothing.

She opens the calendar, because she always opens the calendar. Monday: nothing. Tuesday: dentist, four fifteen, which is not a thing anybody dreads. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday: white. She scrolls forward two weeks in case something is hiding there. Nothing is hiding there.

And it is still coming.

It arrives under the ribs, a kind of drop, the way an elevator drops when it starts down before you were ready for it. Nothing has happened. Nobody has said anything. The week ahead is, by any honest reading of it, an ordinary week. And by ten past seven she is standing in the kitchen with the fridge open, not hungry, looking for something that is not in there.

She has tried finding the cause. She is good at finding causes. She has gone back over Friday's conversation three times. She has checked the account. She has stood at the mirror and looked at herself the way you look at a car you are thinking of buying. None of it is it.

Here is the part she has never said out loud. She would almost rather something were wrong. At least then there would be a thing, and a thing can be handled. What she cannot handle is a feeling that turns up with no return address.

By nine she is fine. That is the strangest part of all. By nine she is watching something and laughing at it.

And next Sunday, at about twenty to seven, the light will start going from honey to gray on the wall above the radiator.

That is you, at twenty to seven.

Maybe yours is not Sunday. Maybe it is Thursday afternoon, or the second the engine goes off on the drive, or the ten minutes after the house finally goes quiet. But you know the drop. You know it comes without an invoice attached.

So before anything else, hear two things. You are not required to find the cause, and nobody in heaven is holding your peace back until you produce one. And this dread is not a failure of faith. It is not a thin place in your trust, it is not a verdict on how you have walked with God, and there is nothing wrong with you for feeling a thing you cannot explain.

The verse never asks what is wrong

Isaiah 41 was not spoken into an empty week. It was spoken to a nation in exile, a long way from home, with real enemies and a real border between them and everything they loved. And when God opens His mouth to them, He does not begin with the threat.

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.Isaiah 41:10

Read the order of it. Four commands, and four reasons underneath them, and not one of the reasons is about the situation. Fear thou not, for I am with thee. Be not dismayed, for I am thy God. Not because the danger was assessed and downgraded. Not because somebody went through the calendar and found it empty. Because of who is standing there.

So hear what that means in a front room on a Sunday. You are held tonight without producing a reason for it. That is not a kind thought to get you to nine o'clock; it is Isaiah 41:10, written down centuries before your radiator existed, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it across all that distance and lays it exactly where the drop is.

And notice what He never asks. He never says, tell Me what is wrong first. He never makes the comfort conditional on the diagnosis. Which is worth sitting with, because most people in that chair have spent years assuming peace is something handed over after the cause is found, and that until then they are simply people who cannot manage an ordinary week.

Sunday evening is a doorway hour. It is the customs hall between one week and the next, and a body braces at thresholds, it always has. But hear this at the gate: you are not standing in a line waiting to be assessed, and nothing is being read out over your name. Scripture says there is now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, and the same Spirit who moved the man who wrote that line is standing beside you in the doorway.

Then take the last clause with you, because it is the one doing the work. Uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Uphold is not a wave from the shore. It is a hand underneath, taking weight, the way you carry a bowl too full to trust to one hand. And His righteousness, not yours, is what that hand is made of. You were held through every Sunday you have ever spent like this, and you are held tonight, and His word never once made that conditional on a steady stomach. It is His Spirit doing the holding, not your composure.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and you can make it sitting down. You are allowed to stop investigating. Not because the cause does not matter, but because the peace was never being withheld until you produced one: Scripture hands it over on the strength of who He is, and it is His Spirit, not your understanding, who makes it land in a body that is already braced.

So let the question go unanswered for one evening. Let the calendar stay white. Let the drop under the ribs be a feeling rather than a message, because a feeling does not have to be obeyed and it does not have to be explained.

And take this while the light is still gray on the wall. You are not waiting for the floor to fall, and holding it up was never going to be your job. You are held now by a right hand that is not yours, and nothing is coming that He is not already standing in. That is what is written, and His Spirit is the one making it true in the room instead of true on a page.

One quiet thing, and then we go on. If some evening has ever taken you as far as thinking that not being here would be a relief, please say so to one human being tonight: a doctor, a crisis line where you live, or one person who can come and sit in that room with you. Saying it out loud is not weakness and it is not drama. It is the right next thing, and it is worth doing before nine o'clock.

Now, back to the chair. Whatever the week holds, and it may well hold something, you are not walking into it alone and you are not walking into it unheld. He goes in ahead of you and He goes in beside you, and His word has never yet been withdrawn from anybody who leaned their weight on it. His Spirit is with you at twenty to seven next Sunday exactly as surely as He is with you now.

Declare this over yourself

You have standing to speak these, and it is not standing you earned by having a reason. It is yours in Christ, given to you rather than achieved, the way an ambassador speaks with an authority that was never personally his. Say them in the chair, out loud if the room allows it. And leave the outcome with Him, who answers as He sees fit and in His own way, and who has never once been careless with somebody speaking to Him from a room like this. Scripture is the ground these stand on, and the Holy Spirit is what makes them more than sentences.

  1. Sunday evening, you are an hour and not a verdict. Nothing is being read out over me at twenty to seven, and the God who says fear thou not, for I am with thee, is in this room while the light goes gray on the wall. You do not get to keep announcing a thing that is not coming.
  2. Feeling that something is wrong with me, you are not a diagnosis and you are not my name. The word of God calls me upheld by a right hand that is not my own, and a dread with no object has no case to bring against me. In the name of Jesus, leave my Sunday evening and take the drop under my ribs with you.
  3. Lord, You are with me and You are not waiting for me to explain myself first. Your word says You uphold me with the right hand of Your righteousness, and I am turning both hands over on my knees and holding them still for one breath. Your Spirit is what makes that true in this room, and I walk into Monday held.
