When Body TakesPsalm 18:19

Nowhere To Pull Over

This message is for your chest tightening on the highway with nowhere to pull over and miles to the next exit

The orange barrels start about a mile after the sign, and the shoulder goes with them.

He is in the middle lane of three, doing forty-five, boxed. Concrete barrier on the left where the shoulder used to be. A truck on the right, close enough that he can read the dried mud on its wheels. Behind him, a pickup that has sat about a car length back for six minutes.

On the passenger seat there is a flask of cardamom coffee his wife filled at five thirty this morning, a box of dates, and the phone in its cradle saying eleven miles to the exit.

Then his chest goes tight.

Not painful, exactly. Tight, like a strap being taken up a notch. And his hands, which have been at ten and two the whole way, go cold and slightly numb at the fingertips, and something at the back of his skull says, very calmly and very reasonably, that he is going to have to get off this road.

Except there is nowhere to get off. That is the whole thing. There is a barrier, a truck, a pickup, eleven miles and no shoulder.

So he does what he always does, which is talk himself through it. It is not real. It has happened before. Nothing has ever actually. And the talking works about as well as reading a leaflet about swimming while you are already in the water.

He starts counting the reflective posts along the barrier instead. He gets the window down two inches. By mile nine his jaw aches from clamping it, and the flask rolls off the seat into the footwell, and he lets it lie there.

He comes off at the exit and sits in a gas station lot with the engine off and both hands in his lap, and it goes, the way it always goes, in about four minutes. Which leaves him shaking, embarrassed, and forty minutes late.

And then, and this is the part nobody sees, he sits there in the quiet car and begins to dread the drive home.

That is you, in the middle lane.

Maybe it is not a road. Maybe it is the checkout line with three carts behind you, or a meeting you cannot get up and leave, or the middle of a row with people either side, or the twenty minutes inside a scanner. But you know the arithmetic of it. You know exactly how far it is to the nearest door and how long you would have to hold on.

So hear this before one more word. A body doing that is not a soul failing. It is not a failure of faith, it is not thin trust, and it is not God stepping back to see how you cope. Something old and fast and physical is happening in you, and it is not asking your permission, and nobody in heaven thinks less of a person for it.

Nowhere To Pull Over

He brings people out into room

David wrote Psalm 18 after years of being hunted, and the psalm is full of the language of having nowhere to go: cords, floods, snares, a net. It is a song by a man with no shoulder to pull onto. And when he reaches for the word for what God actually did, he does not say the enemy was removed first. He says this.

He brought me forth also into a large place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me.Psalm 18:19

A large place. The word underneath it is width, room, breadth, the exact opposite of a lane with a wall on one side and a truck on the other. Not a better road. Room. What that man was given was space to stand in at the moment the space had run out.

So hear it where you actually are. You are standing in a large place at forty-five miles an hour in the middle lane, because the room He gives is not made of asphalt and does not require a gap in the traffic. That is not a nice thought to get you to the exit; it is Psalm 18:19, and it is His Spirit who opens room inside a chest that has gone tight, long before anything on the road moves.

And say the next part plainly, once, in daylight, because it is ordinary and it matters. A body that does that deserves to be looked at by a doctor. Chest tightness is worth having checked properly, and nobody writing this is going to tell you what your symptoms are or are not. Going and getting it seen is not small faith; it is good care of a body God made and calls His own, and doctors, medicine and counseling are ordinary mercies rather than concessions.

Now look at the reason clause, which is the part everybody skips. He delivered me, because he delighted in me. Not because I held my nerve. Not because I got my breathing right at mile eight. Because He delighted in me. The whole rescue rests on His affection, and the man being rescued contributes nothing at all to the reason.

Which means this, and take it into the car with you: you are delighted in on your worst drive. Not tolerated. Not managed. Delighted in, at forty-five, with your jaw clamped and your fingers cold, and His word puts it in exactly those terms. It is the Holy Spirit, not your composure, who carries that into a body that has stopped listening to reason.

And a wave is not a master. Whatever is happening in your chest, and that is for a doctor to say and not for me, you are not its property and you never were. Scripture calls the Lord the strength of your life, and His Spirit is nearer to you in that lane than the barrier is.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it does not wait for the road to change. You are not standing outside the large place waiting to be let in, and it is not eleven miles ahead of you at the exit. He brought me forth into a large place, says the psalm, and He did it while the net was still there. His Spirit is the room, and the room is already in the car.

So put down the argument. You are not required to reason a wave out of your own body, and nobody is scoring how quickly it passes. What is actually asked of you is one small thing at a time: hands on the wheel, eyes up, the next quarter mile. His word says He will never leave you nor forsake you, and it is the same Spirit who moved the man who wrote that carrying you between the barrels now.

One quiet thing before the last part. If any of this has ever taken you as far as not wanting to be here at all, tell one person tonight: a doctor, a crisis line where you live, or somebody who can sit beside you while you say it out loud. That is not an overreaction and it is not weak faith. It is the right next call to make.

Then this, and it stands whether the next drive is easy or hard. You are delighted in, you are brought out, and you are held in a lane with no shoulder by a God who has never once needed you to be calm first. That is what is written, and the Holy Spirit is in the car to make it real to you and not merely true about you.

Declare this over yourself

You have the right to speak these, and it did not come with a steady nervous system. It belongs to you in Christ, delegated, the way an ambassador speaks words that were never his own idea. Say them in the driveway with the engine off, or in the kitchen three days later. And leave the outcome with Him, who answers as He sees fit and in His own way, and who has never once despised somebody for arriving shaking. Scripture is what these rest on, and the Holy Spirit is what makes them land.

  1. Middle lane, you are a stretch of road and not a verdict on my life. There is no shoulder on you and there is room in God, who brought a hunted man out into a large place while the net was still around him. You do not get the eleven miles, and you do not get the drive home.
  2. Verdict that I cannot be trusted, you have no seat in this car. Scripture calls the Lord the strength of my life and says He delivered a man because He delighted in him, and arriving shaking has never once made me less delighted in. In the name of Jesus, get out, and take the dread of the road home with you.
  3. Jesus, You bring me out into a large place and You delight in me on the worst drive I have ever made. I am putting both feet flat on the floor and one hand on my chest, and I am letting the breath out longer than I took it in. Your Spirit is the room I am standing in, and I am going where I said I would go.
