Re-Reading A Decision You Already Made

The boiler in the airing cupboard ticks three times and stops, ticks three times and stops, and she has been counting the sets since ten to three.

3:12 now, on the clock she turned face down at midnight and turned back over at half past two.

The letter is downstairs on the hall table and she does not need to go and look at it. She could recite it: the September intake, her second preference, the small print about appeals that closes a door while sounding like it opens one. She ticked that second box on a Tuesday afternoon at the kitchen table with the radio on, and she remembers the radio, and she remembers feeling calm.

She was calm. That is the part she keeps snagging on.

It is six weeks into term. Her daughter's tie is drying on the radiator in the hall because it went in a puddle at the bus stop, and on Tuesday her daughter said the thing about the bus, said it lightly, the way children say the thing that is actually costing them, and went upstairs.

So at 3:12 in the morning, the court opens.

She goes back to the open evening first, the corridor that smelled of floor polish and toast, the head of year who said they would be lucky to have her, and she runs that sentence twice, once as warmth and once as a sales line. Then back to the kitchen and the pen, and she watches herself tick the second box the way you watch footage of an accident, willing the car to turn.

Nothing in this room can be changed. The form went in in October, the letter came in March, and everybody else in the house is asleep. She is the accused, the prosecutor and the only witness called, and she has already lost it eleven times tonight.

Around four she will fall asleep out of pure tiredness. At seven she will make toast. And the next night the court opens again at the same hour, because a case that never closes does not need new evidence. It only needs the dark.

That is you, awake with the second box ticked.

Maybe yours is not a school. Maybe it is a house you sold, a job you took, a treatment you agreed to, a form you signed for somebody who could not sign it, a country you left. Whatever it was, you decided it in daylight with what was in front of you, and at this hour you are prosecuting it with information you did not own at the time.

Hear this before anything else, because everything after it stands on it. What is happening to you tonight is not a failure of faith. It is not weak faith or small faith or borrowed faith. A tired mind reopening a settled thing at three in the morning is doing something human, not something wicked, and nobody is standing over your bed at 3:12 shaking their head. Not the Lord. He was at that kitchen table while the radio was on, and He is in this room now, and nothing has changed in Him between the two.

The Decision Was Made In The Light, And The Light Has Not Changed

There is a verse that gets embroidered on cushions and read out at weddings, and it was written for a night exactly like this one.

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.Proverbs 3:5-6

Read what it does not say. It does not say He shows you the whole road before your foot goes down, or that there is one correct door with a wrong one either side of it and a life won or lost on picking right. That is a maze, and a maze needs a map. This verse hands you something else.

The word behind "direct" carries the picture of a road being made level: stones lifted out, ruts filled in, the way smoothed for the one already walking it. It is not a preview handed over at the junction. It is work done on the path while the feet are on it.

So take it as it stands, tonight. You are not being led by a God who hides the door and then marks you down for missing it. Your road is being made level while you are on it, and Proverbs 3:6 is not a poem about that, it is a promise of it. And it is not these sentences doing anything to you at 3:12. It is the Holy Spirit carrying a word that has never once been withdrawn into a room where somebody is lying very still.

Then look at the line just before it, the one nobody embroiders. Lean not unto thine own understanding. At three in the morning your own understanding is the only voice in the house still awake, and it is the least reliable version of itself that exists: no daylight, no counsel, nobody to say "that is not what she meant". The verse names that voice and tells you not to lean on it. That is not a rebuke, it is a mercy.

And here is what the same verse hands you before you feel anything change: you are not the one holding this family on the road. You have a Shepherd, and a Shepherd who must be located before He will lead is no Shepherd at all. His word says He goes out in front of the ones He leads, and His Spirit is the one who lifts that off the page and sets it down in a dark bedroom.

There is a scene in Zechariah worth having at this hour. A man stands before the Lord in filthy clothes with an accuser at his right hand, and the accuser has a real case; nobody pretends the clothes are clean. The Lord does not argue it, review the evidence, or adjourn for further consideration. He rebukes the accuser, and has the filthy garments taken off the man and a clean set put on him while he is still standing there.

That is how the courtroom you are lying in gets closed. Not by winning the argument. By the Judge declining to hear it.

Which means the verdict you keep reaching for at ten past three has already been overruled. You are not on trial for the second box, and you were not on trial for it in October either. Romans 8:1 is written in ink that does not run in the dark: there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. And it is His Spirit, not your rehearsing, who makes a sentence like that land somewhere under your ribs.

The decision itself was made in the light you had, and the light you had was given to you. You are not being judged for failing to see in October what only March could show. That is what "in all thy ways acknowledge him" covers: the ways, plural, the ordinary ones, a kitchen table with the radio on. His word puts an ordinary Tuesday under His direction, and His Spirit was in that kitchen long before the letter came.
