The Sum That Never Comes Out Different

This message is for the arithmetic that arrives at three in the morning and runs the same sum until six

The chair has a short leg. Front right. There has been a folded square of cardboard under it since March, and the cardboard has gone soft, so now the chair does not rock so much as settle, twice, every time he leans forward.

He is on it at four minutes past three, in the dark, because putting the kitchen light on would make it official.

The fridge hums, and then stops humming, which is somehow worse. On the counter there is half a flatbread from last night with a plate laid over it, and a tin of dates his mother sent in the spring that nobody has opened, because opening it would mean it was gone.

And he is doing the sum.

Rent on the twelfth. The van, which needs two tires and the part the man at the garage called the arm. The electric, which went up in April and again in September. The three payments that leave the account on the first, before he has ever laid eyes on the money. Then what is left. Big ones first, down to the small ones, and he arrives at the number.

He does not like the number.

So he does it again. Slower this time. He moves the van to next month and takes the tires on their own. He does it a third time with the overtime in it, the overtime nobody has offered him. The total shifts by about forty dollars and then comes straight back to where it was.

By half past four he has run it eleven times and it has come out the same eleven times, and here is the part he could never say out loud without hearing how it sounds. He was not checking it. He knew it was right the first time. He ran it again because running it again felt like doing something, and doing something felt better than lying upstairs being a man who could do nothing.

Around a quarter to six the birds start, which he has come to hate, because birds mean the night did not work.

He puts his hand flat on the table. The chair settles twice. And he notices, for the first time in weeks, that his shoulders have been up somewhere near his ears for three hours, and he lets them down, and it hurts on the way down.

That is you, on the chair with the short leg.

Maybe yours is not a van and it is not rent. Maybe it is the appointment, or the two of them upstairs who are not speaking, or a conversation you have already had four times without opening your mouth. But you know the sum. You know how it ends. And you are running it again anyway, and it will still be running at six.

Before one more thing is said, hear this. What is happening to you tonight is not a failure of faith. It is not a spiritual defect and it is not a hole in your trust. It is a mind that learned, a long time ago and for a good reason, that going over a thing keeps the thing from getting you. It is not working tonight. It is not wickedness either, and nobody in heaven is disappointed in you at that kitchen table.

The Sum That Never Comes Out Different

Tomorrow has not been issued yet

There is a sentence of Jesus that gets quoted at frightened people like a rebuke, and it was never a rebuke. He said it in the open air, to farm workers and fishermen and mothers who did not know where the next meal was coming from.

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.Matthew 6:34

Take no thought does not mean do not plan. The same Teacher told a story about a man who counted the cost before he built a tower. It means do not carry. There is a difference between working out what a thing costs in daylight, with a pen, and hauling the whole weight of an unarrived day across a dark kitchen at three in the morning. The first is stewardship. The second is freight, and it was never assigned to you.

So hear what that verse hands you tonight, before one figure on your list changes: you are not the one appointed to carry tomorrow. That is not a nice thought, it is Scripture, written down and kept for exactly this hour. And the Holy Spirit is not standing behind your chair waiting for you to arrive at a better total. He is in that kitchen to take the weight out of your hands.

Look at the reason He gives, because it is the whole thing. Sufficient unto the day. Every day comes with enough in it, and the enough is issued with the day, never before it, the way bread arrives hot and does not keep. His people learned that in a desert, with bread on the ground every morning. They were told to gather what they needed for that day and no more, and the ones who tried to store tomorrow's portion overnight found it spoiled by first light. That was not a punishment. It was a lesson baked into breakfast: grace does not stockpile. It comes with the day it is for.

Which is why the sum keeps coming out the same. You are trying to solve a day with supplies that have not been handed out yet. You have not failed the arithmetic; the arithmetic is not solvable at this hour, not by you and not by anybody, and the word of God says so plainly. And it is the Spirit of God, not these sentences, speaking that into your chest rather than into your ears.

And notice He does not pretend tomorrow is empty. He is not a Teacher who tells frightened people that nothing is wrong; He tells them the trouble is real, that it is rationed to the day it belongs to, and that no day is ever asked to carry two. So the day you are dreading has a portion set against it, and the portion has your name on it, dated, and the date is not tonight. His word calls Him the God who gives to all men liberally and never scolds anybody for asking, and it is His Spirit, not your composure, holding you steady when you walk into it.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is smaller than you expected, and it happens in the dark with nobody watching. You are not required to solve anything tonight in order to have peace. Peace is not the prize for a total you can live with. Peace is a Person, and He is already sitting on the other side of that table: Scripture calls Him the Prince of Peace and says He gives His peace, not the way the world hands things over, and it is His Spirit who carries that word off the page into that kitchen.

So put the sum down. Not solved. Not balanced. Not understood. Down, the way you set a bag of shopping on the hall floor, and let it lie there while you breathe.

And hear what is true of you while it lies there. You are held right now, at this exact hour, with the number unchanged and the van still needing tires. You are not held because the arithmetic improved. You are held because He keeps what belongs to Him, and His word says He gives His beloved sleep, and His Spirit is keeping watch over that house while you stop keeping it.

One quiet thing before we go on. If the arithmetic has gone somewhere darker than money tonight, if part of you has started working out whether the people you love would be better off without you, please tell one human being before the sun is up: your doctor, a crisis line where you live, or somebody who can come and sit in that kitchen with you. Nobody is a burden for saying it out loud, and making that call is the right next thing.

Now, back to the table. Whatever the number is, this is what stands over you while you sit there: you are His, the night is His, and the morning coming has already had its portion set aside. That is not optimism. That is what is written, and the Holy Spirit is in the room to make it real to you and not merely true.

Declare this over yourself

You have a right to speak these, and it is not a right you earned by sleeping well or forfeited by lying awake. It belongs to you in Christ, delegated, the way an ambassador carries words he did not invent. Say them out loud if the house allows it, or under your breath if it does not, and leave the outcome with Him, who answers as He sees fit, in His own way, and has never once been careless with somebody who asked. Scripture is what these lines stand on, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes them land.

  1. Three in the morning, you are not my auditor and this table is not a courtroom. The sum is finished arithmetic and I am putting it down where it belongs, at the feet of the God who feeds His own by the day and has never yet been late to a table. What is written for tomorrow is His to issue, and He issues it with the morning it belongs to.
  2. Lie that I have stopped caring, you have no bed in this house. The word of God lays the weight of tomorrow on the One who owns tomorrow, and I am not the last wall standing between the people I love and the morning. In the name of Jesus, get out of my kitchen and take the arithmetic with you.
  3. Father, You feed Your own by the day and You have never yet handed anybody a morning without the bread that goes with it. I am opening my hand, I am taking one breath, and I am leaving tomorrow with You, where Your word already put it. Your Spirit keeps this house tonight, and I lie down inside it.
