Nameless DreadDeuteronomy 33:27

Doors Locked, Stove Off, Everybody Breathing

This message is for the dread that arrives at night with nothing attached to it, when nothing is wrong and you still cannot get your chest to believe it

Front door. Turn it, then pull it towards you, because turning it is not the same as it being locked and she has known that since she was about thirty.

Back door. Key out of the dish, in, round, out again, dish.

Stove. All four, with a hand flat above each one, which is a thing she has done since a night that had nothing to do with any of this.

Back gate, through the kitchen window. She cannot see the bolt from there so she counts the fence panels and looks at the shape of the gate against the hedge, and it looks right, and she stands there for slightly too long.

Then the landing. Both bedroom doors pushed to about a hand's width. She does not go in any more because the eldest is fourteen and would kill her. She stands on the landing and listens instead, and waits until she has heard both of them breathe, and then she goes to bed.

That is the list. It takes about four minutes on a good night.

And she gets into bed with the list finished, every item of it checked and every one of them fine, and the thing in her chest is exactly where it was before she started.

So she goes round again. The second lap is longer, because on the second lap she is checking the ones she already checked, and she knows that, and she does it anyway.

Nothing is wrong. That is the maddening part and she cannot make anybody understand it. There is no diagnosis in this house. Nobody has left. The job is fine, the money is what it always is, the boys are well. If you asked her what she is afraid of she would open her mouth and nothing would come out, and then she would feel foolish, and then she would apologize.

People keep asking what it is about. Kindly. Her sister asks. And every time she has no answer, she comes away feeling that she has failed some sort of test, as if a fear you cannot name is a fear you have not taken seriously enough.

So the first thing, before anything else. I am not going to ask you what it is about.

Not once, in this whole message. You do not owe anybody a cause tonight, and free floating dread does not come with a label on it, and the fact that you cannot produce one is not a failing in you. It is what this thing is actually like.

Doors Locked, Stove Off, Everybody Breathing

Nobody promised you the floor. He promised you what is under it

Here is the line I want in your hands, and it is one of the oldest in the book, spoken by a very old man over people who were about to walk into a great deal of uncertainty.

The eternal God is your dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms.Deuteronomy 33:27

Read it again and notice where it puts your attention.

Not on the surface. Not on the four doors and the stove and the gate. It does not say the floor is sound and nothing is going to happen, because nobody who loves you should promise you that, and I am not going to either.

It says underneath.

That is the answer to the fear you actually have. Because if you sat down and worked out what the dread is saying, past the words, it is one thing. It is the floor is going to give way. Something is coming, I do not know what, and when it comes there is nothing under me.

And the sentence in Deuteronomy does not argue with the first half. It walks straight past it and answers the second half, which is the half that has been keeping you upright at eleven o'clock at night doing a second lap.

There is something under you. There always has been. It is not a guarantee about tomorrow, it is a fact about right now, and it holds when the day is easy and it holds when the day is not.

And notice how physical it is. Arms. Not a principle, not a promise on paper. Arms, which is a word about somebody actually being there and taking the weight, the way you have taken the weight of a sleeping child up a staircase.

And that is not me being warm at you in the dark. That is Deuteronomy 33, written down long before you were born and holding tonight, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written line like that and presses it into a chest that will not settle.

Now let me put down three things plainly, and then we will go on.

The first is that this is not a failure of faith. Not one word of this message is going to suggest that if you trusted better you would sleep better. That is a cruelty, and it gets said far too often, and it is not in this house.

The second is about the practical side, and it is short and it is honest. Nothing in this message touches your medicine. If you are taking something, keep taking it. If you are seeing somebody about this, keep seeing them. Talking to a professional is not a shortage of trust, it is somebody with training being kind to you, and God has always worked through hands that turn up. Nowhere in the written word is the doctor set against the Spirit, and His Spirit has never once needed you to go without help in order to work.

The third is this, and I say it because it belongs in the open. If the nights have got darker than dread, if there have been thoughts about not being here at all, do not sit alone with that tonight. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, ring your local crisis line, and tell one living person. Reading this is good and it is not enough, and you deserve somebody in the room with you.

The breakthrough

So here is what is being handed over, and it is not a technique for getting to sleep.

You have been trying to make the dread go away by finding its cause, because a cause could be dealt with, and everybody around you has been helping you look. And every night the search fails, and the failure gets added to the pile, and by now you are afraid of the fear as well as whatever the fear is about.

You are not going to be asked to find it. Let it be nameless. It does not need a name for God to be underneath you, and it never did. I am not inventing that permission for you either. It is what is written, and His Spirit is the one carrying it to you at this hour and not asking you for a cause first.

The dread says the floor is going to go. What God says is that He is your dwelling place, which means the house you are standing in is Him, and underneath are the everlasting arms. Not tomorrow. Underneath, now, tonight, while your chest is still going and the list is still unfinished.

And your chest can take as long as it likes to catch up. That is not the measure of anything. A body that has been braced for a long time comes down slowly, and there is no test being marked here.

You are held. Not because the night is safe. Because of what is under the floor. That is the promise as it is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds it under you while you sit there with the list still unfinished.

Declare this over yourself

Say them sitting, palms up, quietly enough not to wake anybody. Every grain of this authority is His own, delegated and given to you because you are in Christ, and it is His Spirit in you who makes these words more than air and Christ is in you, and none of it depends on whether you can name what is frightening you. Speak to the dread, receive what He hands over, and leave the rest with Him, because however He answers, He answers as Himself.

  1. Dread with no name on it, you are not a warning and I do not owe you a reason. Scripture says the eternal God is my dwelling place and underneath are the everlasting arms, so what is under this floor is a vault and not a void, and always was. I am not waiting for it to give way tonight.
  2. Waiting for the floor to fall, stop now, in the name of Jesus. God is my dwelling place, which means the house I am standing in is Him, and a house does not drop through its own floor. My chest can take as long as it needs to catch up, and I am held every minute that it takes.
  3. Jesus, You slept through a storm in a boat while everybody on board was certain it was going down, and You were not pretending the water was calm. God, Your word says You are my dwelling place, and Your Spirit is in this room tonight while nothing is coming that You are not already standing in. I am held now, and underneath are the arms.
