Nameless DreadPsalm 118:24

The First Warm Day And That Feeling

This message is for the dread that shows up on the first warm day of the year, when there is nothing at all to answer it with

Somebody two doors down has cut their grass for the first time this year, and the whole street smells of it.

It is the first proper one. Not a mild afternoon in February that everyone pretends about. The real thing: doors wedged open with shoes, a radio going somewhere, a boy on a bike who has already fallen off once and got straight back on.

She has taken her fleece off and tied it around her waist, and she is sitting on the back step with a mug going cold beside her because she forgot it was there.

Everything is fine.

That is the strange part. Everything is genuinely fine. The bills got paid this month. Nobody is ill. Her daughter texted a photograph of a dog she met, no reason, just the dog. The sun comes through the hedge in long stripes across the grass and there is smoke somewhere, the first barbecue of the year, and it smells like every good summer she has ever had.

And underneath her ribs, low down and slightly to the left, something is bracing.

Not a thought. That is what makes it so hard to argue with. If it were a thought she could answer it. She could write it down and check it and take it apart. This has no sentence in it. It is a posture her body has taken up on its own, the way you would stand if you thought somebody was about to slam a door.

She runs the list anyway, because that is what you do. The children: fine. Work: fine, and better than fine. Her mother: seen on Sunday, complaining about the neighbors, which is the healthiest sign there is.

Nothing. There is nothing on the list.

So she does the second thing, which is worse. She starts to wonder whether the feeling knows something she does not. Whether this is a warning she is supposed to be reading, and what on earth she would do about it.

The grass smell keeps coming over the fence. Somebody laughs two gardens along.

She sits in the best weather of the year so far, holding a cold mug, quietly waiting for the other shoe.

That is you, on the step, in the sun.

Maybe it is not a garden. Maybe it is the walk from the car to the office on the first morning you did not need a coat, or the sound of the whole family in one room, or a Saturday with nothing in it, which used to be the thing you wanted most. The setting keeps changing and the feeling does not: a good day, and a body that will not accept the good day, and no reason anywhere that you can put your finger on.

Hear this before anything else. You do not have to find the cause. Nobody here is going to make you produce one, and this is not a failure of faith, and it is not you being ungrateful. A body that braces on a warm afternoon is a body that learned something once, and it is trying to keep you alive in the only way it knows. You are safe here. Sit with your fleece tied round your waist and let me teach you something.

The First Warm Day And That Feeling

The day was made, and so was the one sitting in it

There is a line people put on mugs and tea towels, and it comes out of a song written by somebody who had just come through something ugly.

This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.Psalm 118:24

Read the psalm around it sometime and you will see who is talking. A man who says he called out in distress, who says he was surrounded, who says he was pushed hard so that he was falling. This is not a person with an easy life admiring the weather. It is a person who knows exactly what a bad day looks like, standing in a good one, and refusing to call it an accident.

Look at the verb. Made. Not happened. Not turned out nice. Made, the way a table is made, by somebody who chose the wood.

So hear this on your step. You are not sitting in a coincidence, and you are not sitting in a trap. The day you are having was fashioned, and Psalm 118:24 says so in writing, and the Holy Spirit is not somewhere else this afternoon while you decide whether to trust it. He is in the sunlight on the grass with you, and He is in the smell of the smoke, and He has been in every ordinary good hour you have ever been too braced to enjoy.

Now let me say the hard thing gently, because it is the thing you most need somebody to say out loud.

That feeling is not a message.

Dread with no name has no object at the end of the line. That is what free floating means. It is not a telegram from your future and it is not a piece of information you failed to decode. A nervous system that has been through enough learns to associate the good and the calm with what came after the good and the calm the last time, and then it fires the alarm on a warm Saturday because warm Saturdays are where it happened once.

That is learning, not prophecy. And it is not the Holy Spirit either. Scripture is plain that God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind, and 2 Timothy 1:7 names all three of those as what you were given. So you have every right to refuse a message you were never sent. He does not steer His children by making their chests tight on the nicest day of the year, and you have His written word for it, and His Spirit will never contradict what He has already put in the book.

Then look at the second half of the verse, because it does something people rarely notice. Be glad in it. Not because of it. Not on account of it. In it.

Gladness is not something you have to manufacture out of the raw material of your feelings this afternoon. It is a place. It is a chair already put out in the garden, and being glad in the day means sitting down in what God has made rather than generating a mood you do not have. You have permission to be glad without feeling good first, because His written word puts the gladness in the day rather than in your chest, and the Spirit who made the day is the one who makes the sitting down possible.

The breakthrough

Put the list down.

You have been checking a list for years and the list keeps coming back clean, and every clean list has quietly made things worse, because if nothing is wrong then the feeling must be about something you have not found yet. Stop hunting. There is nothing to find, and you were never the detective in this story.

This is yours instead, right now, on the step, with the mug going cold. You are not being set up. You are held inside a day that was made on purpose by a God who does not build ambushes for His own children, and His word calls Him good and His mercy everlasting in that same psalm, and it is His Spirit, not your vigilance, who keeps you in it.

Here is the part that costs something, and I will not pretend otherwise. You are being asked to enjoy an afternoon without a guarantee. To let the boy fall off the bike and get back on, and to laugh at the sprinkler, and to eat outside, while the old bracing is still going on underneath the ribs. Doing it braced is not failing. That is what receiving looks like on a day like this.

And you have already survived every single one of the days you spent waiting for the other shoe. Look behind you. The alarm has been wrong hundreds of times and has never once apologized, and Scripture says His compassions are new every morning, and the same Spirit who carried you through the hard ones is the one sitting with you in this good one.

If the feeling has ever gone further than dread, if there have been days when a thought about not being here has come and sat down beside it, tell one human being. Today if you can: a doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit on the step with you. And if you are already in therapy, or taking something that helps, keep going, because that is a good and ordinary way of receiving help.

Declare this over yourself

The standing to speak like this is yours in Christ, given rather than achieved, and a good afternoon does not qualify you for it and a bad one does not disqualify you. Psalm 118:24 is His written word about this day and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it land in your chest, so speak to what is actually in front of you and leave the rest of the day where it belongs, because the outcome is His to hold and never yours to guarantee.

  1. First warm day, you are not an ambush and you are not a bill I have to pay later. The Lord made you on purpose, and His word calls you the day the Lord has made before you were ever my afternoon. I sit down in you now, cut grass and smoke and all.
  2. Old idea that I am the one who ruins good things, you have no ground in this garden and no claim on this hour. In the name of Jesus I put you out, and the Spirit of God takes the chair you were sitting in. I am His workmanship and I am allowed to be glad.
  3. Lord, You are the maker of this day and You are not setting me up. Your word says this is the day You have made, and Your Spirit is the one turning that sentence into ground under my feet. I open my hands on my knees and I am glad in it now, without one reason to give anybody.
