Twenty to four on a Tuesday. The light has come around to the west side of the house and is lying across the counter in one long panel, the way it does for about forty minutes in the spring and then stops.
He is cutting an apple into quarters because his daughter comes in at four and eats one standing up with her bag still on. The radio is on low, somebody talking about traffic on a road he never drives. The dishwasher is running. There is a smell of warm cardboard from the box the dog sleeps in.
And then the floor of him drops about six inches.
That is the only way he has ever found to describe it. Not a thought. Not a memory. Something closer to the feeling of an elevator starting down before you were ready, except there is no elevator, there is a kitchen, and there is half an apple going brown on the board.
He puts the knife on the board and stands very still, because standing still is what he does now, and he begins the search. This is the part that has become a routine. He goes through the house in his head, room by room, looking for the thing.
Money: fine. Not comfortable, but fine, the same fine it has been for two years. His daughter: fine, she was singing in the hallway this morning. His wife: fine, she texted about the dentist. Work: fine. His mother: fine, he called on Sunday. The scan last year: clear, and the letter is in the drawer, and he has read the letter more times than is reasonable.
Nothing. He arrives at the end of the search with nothing in his hands.
And that is the part nobody tells you about. He would honestly rather it had been the money. A reason can be answered. A reason has a size and a shape and eventually a phone call that ends it. This has no edges. It is a feeling with nothing attached to it, arriving at twenty to four on a perfectly ordinary Tuesday, in a kitchen full of sunlight, over an apple.
At four he hears the gate, and he picks the knife back up and finishes the quarters, and she comes in with her bag still on and says something about a boy called Dominic, and he laughs in the right place. He is good at that now. The drop is still sitting under the conversation like a stone in a shoe.
That is you, on your own ordinary Tuesday. Nothing has happened. Nothing is coming that you can name. And your chest has decided otherwise anyway.
So before anything else, hear this and let it settle: what is happening to you is not a failure of faith. A frightened person is not a faithless person, and nothing in you is broken beyond mending because your body arrived early to a threat that never showed up. And here is the other thing, and it is the one that changes the afternoon: you are not required to find the cause. Nobody is standing over you asking you to name it first. You do not have to pass that test to be helped, because it was never a test.

The Search You Keep Coming Back Empty From
Here is what the search is for, and it is not foolishness. It is your mind doing the sensible thing.
Your mind believes, reasonably, that a feeling this size must have a cause, and that if it finds the cause it can fix it, and if it fixes it the feeling will go. So it walks the house. Money, daughter, wife, work, mother, the letter in the drawer. It comes back with nothing, and then it does not conclude that there is nothing. It concludes that it has missed something, and it goes around again.
That loop is the reason the dread outlasts the afternoon. It has become a thing you feel and then a thing you investigate, and the investigating keeps it in the room long after the feeling itself would have moved on.
Now look at what a man wrote down about his own crowded head, thousands of years ago, without ever once managing to name the thing that was after him.
In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.Psalm 94:19
Read where the comfort lands. Not after the multitude. Not once the thoughts have been sorted, counted, labeled and dealt with one by one. In the multitude. Right in the middle of the crowd, while the crowd is still going.
You have comfort that does not wait on a diagnosis and never once asks you to produce a reason first. That is written, and it is yours at twenty to four this afternoon: His word puts the comfort inside the noise rather than on the far side of it, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it in there, into a kitchen with the radio on and half an apple going brown on the board.
And look at the verb, because it is not the one you would expect. Not thy comforts steady my soul. Not manage, not survive, not cope. Delight. You are not on trial in your own kitchen, and the gladness that word points at is handed to you rather than earned by you.
Notice too what the psalm never does. It never explains itself. The man writing it does not get his reason either. He does not finish the search and neither will you, and Scripture puts his line in the songbook anyway, unexplained, and lets it stand for everyone since who has come back from the search with nothing in their hands. You are in good company and you are in the book.
So put the search down. You have permission that was signed a long time before you woke up this morning: you owe nothing an explanation this afternoon. That permission is written, and the same Spirit who moved on the man who wrote Psalm 94 is the one settling it on you now, in this room, at this hour.
None of that makes a doctor unnecessary, by the way. A body that keeps doing this deserves to be talked about with somebody who knows bodies, and going is a wise and perfectly ordinary thing to do. Medicine, doctors and good therapy are gifts, and using them has never been the opposite of trust.
So here is the afternoon, turned around.
You are not waiting for the floor to fall. That has never been what your life is, whatever your stomach reported at twenty to four, and the word of God says His comforts arrive in the multitude and not after it, which means they are already here, in this kitchen, while the noise is still going. His Spirit is doing that in you now, without your permission and without your explanation.
And the thing you have half believed about yourself, that something in you is quietly broken and this is the first sign of it: put that down. It is not true. You have a soul that God calls delightable, and that is His word for it, not mine. The same Spirit who wrote comfort into the middle of a crowded head is calling you whole while your hands are still unsteady.
One more thing, said plainly, and then it is left alone. If the drop this week has gone further than dread and as far as not wanting to be here, tell one human being today: a doctor, the crisis line where you live, or one person who will sit with you. That call is an ordinary, sensible thing to make, and somebody would be glad to be the one who picked up.
Now let the search stay unfinished. Nothing is coming toward you that God is not already standing in, and He was in this kitchen before the light came around to the west side of the house. That is what is written, and His Spirit is the one making it real in you here. You are held right now, on a Tuesday, with nothing in your hands.
Declare this over yourself
Know what you are standing on before you speak. This authority is not something a calm week earns you or a bad Tuesday takes away: it is yours in Christ, given rather than achieved, and it rests on what is written and not on how steady your voice is right now. We say what God has already settled, and the outcome is His, however He answers, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries Psalm 94:19 off the page and into this kitchen.
- Drop at twenty to four, you are not a warning and I owe you no reason. The apple is on the board, the light is on the counter, and God's own word says His comforts come in the multitude and not after it. I am not searching this house again today.
- Suspicion that something in me is quietly broken, you are evicted in the name of Jesus, and you do not get to speak over my afternoon. My soul is the thing Scripture calls delighted by His comfort. His Spirit says whole, and His word agrees with Him.
- Father, You were in this kitchen before the light came around, and nothing is coming that You are not already standing in. Your comforts are in the middle of the crowd with me right now. My hands are open on my knees and I am not going looking.
