He has the phone face up on his knee, and the screen has gone dark twice while he sat there.
Nine days. The last thing his friend sent him was a photograph of a fence post, of all things, with two words under it: finally straight. He laughed at that on a Thursday and sent back a line about buying the man a level for his birthday. It was the last ordinary thing between them.
Since then he has sent three. The first was nothing, a link to something they have both found funny since they were nineteen. The second, four days later, was lighter than he felt. The third went at twenty to midnight on Tuesday and said four words: you doing all right? Delivered. Then the flat white screen, the little round photograph of his friend in a boat, and nothing under it.
He has a fourth written. It has sat in that box two days while he added to it and cut it back, and every version is wrong. Say too much and he is a man making another man's silence about himself. Say too little and it reads like he has stopped asking. He reads it once more, deletes it, and puts the phone face down on the arm of the chair.
Then the two theories start, as they have every night since the fourth day.
The first has a picture attached. The cookout in June, one sentence about his friend's work, said lightly, in front of two other people, replayed so often he can no longer hear what it sounded like. In this one his friend has quietly decided something about him and is being kind about it by being gone.
The second has no picture at all. It is a truck in a driveway at the wrong time of day with the curtains still closed, and it does not arrive as a thought. It arrives low down, under the ribs, like a stair that is not there in the dark.
He turns the phone back over. Nothing has changed, and he knew nothing had, because it has not made a sound.
That is you, with the phone face down on the arm of the chair.
Maybe it is a brother and not a friend. Maybe a daughter, a green dot, a read receipt that stopped coming. But you know the name. You said it to yourself before the end of that first line.
And before we go a step further, hear this: what is happening in you at this hour is not a failure of faith. Fear for somebody you love is not unbelief wearing a coat. Nobody in heaven is shaking their head at you tonight, and you are not the weak one for lying awake over a man who has not written back.

What He Actually Asked You To Carry
Paul is at the end of a hard letter, giving working instructions to people who have to keep living in the same town.
Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.Galatians 6:2
Bear. Carry. Not solve, not fix, not get to the bottom of. Nothing in that letter tells you to extract an answer out of a man who has gone quiet, and nothing makes a friendship count only once he writes back.
Let this come off you first: it is the heaviest thing in the room and was never yours to hold. You are not failing at this. You have done the very thing Galatians 6:2 asks for: you got underneath a weight and stayed there nine days running, and the Holy Spirit has been in every one of those nights with you, holding the end you cannot see.
Read three verses on, because at first glance it looks like it argues with itself.
For every man shall bear his own burden.Galatians 6:5
Two sentences, three verses apart, and not in a fight. One is the load a man carries because it is his own. The other is the weight too big for one set of shoulders. What Scripture never does is hand you the job of working out which one your friend's silence is. You were never given that job, and His Spirit is not standing over your chair at midnight waiting for you to name the right theory before you may sleep.
And notice what the carrying actually looks like. A link to something silly. Four words at twenty to midnight. A man on the arm of a chair with his eyes shut, saying one name to God for the ninth night in a row. None of it requires his cooperation, and all of it is the law of Christ fulfilled in your front room while he says nothing at all. The word of God does not measure a friendship by its reply rate, and His Spirit is the witness of what you carried whether or not anybody tells you so.
I will not hand you a verdict on the cookout in June, because I do not have one. Here is what I will say plainly: his silence is not your fault. You have not caused it by one sentence said lightly in front of two people, and you have not caused it since by anything you failed to say afterward.
And the other thing, the one you would be embarrassed to say out loud: your fear is not doing anything to him. It is not a jinx and it is not a prophecy. Lying awake in that chair has not put your friend in danger, and closing your eyes tonight will not put him there either. Nothing written anywhere says otherwise, and His Spirit does not need you conscious to be at work in a house across town.
So take this as already true of you, not something to work toward. You are the friend God gave that man, and nine days of quiet has not withdrawn it. Proverbs 17:17 says a friend loves at all times, and all times has to include the stretch where nothing comes back, and the same Spirit who lit that love in you is keeping it lit while it goes unreturned.
So here is what is handed to you, right where you sit.
You are not the keeper of that man. You never were, and the relief in that sentence is the whole point. Psalm 121 says the One who keeps him does not slumber and does not sleep, and that held through every one of these nine nights, including the ones you spent awake doing His job for Him. His Spirit is at work tonight in a house you cannot see into, without needing your permission and without needing your surveillance.
And what you could do, you have already done. You have carried him. That is the whole of what Galatians 6:2 asked for, and it is finished work rather than pending work. It does not become real when he answers and it does not evaporate if he never does. The law of Christ was fulfilled in your chair at twenty to midnight on Tuesday, and the Holy Spirit carried it across town, because that was never a job for a phone.
So we bless the man and let him be loved. We do not command him, and I will not tell you what he is going to do, because his will is his own. Our part is to put him into better hands than ours and take our hands back off. However He answers in that house, what He has settled about you in this one stands.
One thing said plainly, and then we go on. If the fear has ever taken your own thoughts as far as not being here, tell one human being tonight: your doctor, a crisis line where you live, or one person who can come and sit with you. That is not weakness and it is not a lack of faith, it is the ordinary and good way that help arrives.
And if you honestly believe your friend is in trouble, call somebody who lives near him, or drive over and knock. Love that knocks is not an intrusion. It is the friendship doing its job.
Declare this over yourself
Say these standing over the envelope with your hand off it. The authority here is not something a returned message earns you and not something nine days of silence takes off you: it is yours in Christ, given to you and never worked up. His word is what you are saying and His Spirit is what carries it, so however He answers in that house, you speak what is settled here and leave the outcome with Him. Not one of these lines commands your friend. We bless the man; we command the fear.
- Nine days of silence, you are a gap on a screen and you are not a verdict on a friendship. Galatians 6:2 gave me a weight to get under, not an answer to pull out of somebody, and I have been under it since the fourth day with the Holy Spirit holding the end I cannot see.
- Voice that says he finally got tired of me, get out of this house in the name of Jesus. Proverbs 17:17 says a friend loves at all times, and I am that man's friend at all times, silence included. The same Spirit who lit that love in me is keeping it lit tonight while nothing at all comes back.
- Lord, You are the One who keeps him and does not slumber, and Your word says You never sleep. His name is on the paper in front of me and my hand is off it. I am handing him to Your Spirit instead of to my own watching, and I am going to bed.
