Afraid For OthersPsalm 71:9

Two Hundred Miles And She Says She Is Fine

This message is for a mother two hundred miles away who is not managing and tells you every week that she is fine

The phone is already in her hand at four minutes to seven.

She waits. Call early and her mother says you are keen; call late and she says I thought you had forgotten. Thursday at seven is the one arrangement between them that never had to be said out loud.

Seven exactly. Three rings. "Hello, love."

And straight away the second kind of listening starts, the kind she has been doing for fourteen months without ever deciding to. Underneath the weather and the man who came about the meter, she runs the checks she has never admitted to anybody.

The kettle. In thirty years of phone calls her mother has filled the kettle at some point in every one of them. Not tonight. Not last Thursday either.

The post. Two weeks ago she mentioned the letter from the surgery was on the mat. Tonight, just as lightly, the letter from the surgery is on the mat.

The story about Pauline and the wrong bin day, told at ten past seven and again at twenty-five past, the same laugh landing in the same place.

So the daughter asks, the way you ask a question you have already asked once tonight. "How did the appointment go, Mom?"

"Oh, fine."

"Fine how?"

"Fine, love. Honestly. I am fine."

And there it is. The sentence. The one that closes a door so gently you could not swear a door was closed. She has heard it every Thursday since the spring, and four days after the fall on the step that she only learned about because a neighbor put it on a village page.

They say goodbye kindly. They always do.

And then she is at her own kitchen table, phone face down on the wood, a mug going cold at her elbow, two hundred miles from the hallway where half of her has been standing all call. Two hundred miles. Three and a half hours, four with the roadworks. She knows that drive the way other people know a hymn.

Here is the part nobody sees. She will wash up and laugh at something on the television. And at ten past eleven she will lie in the dark and go back through the call line by line, hunting the sentence she should have pressed on.

That is you, with the phone face down on the table.

Maybe it is not your mother. Maybe it is a son whose flat you have never seen, or a sister who answers on the third ring and never on the first. But you know the sentence.

So before one word of teaching: this is not a failure of faith. Loving somebody you cannot reach is not doubt, and the tightness in your chest at ten past eleven says nothing about the state of your soul. Nobody in heaven is shaking their head at you tonight. It is love with nowhere to set itself down.

Two Hundred Miles And She Says She Is Fine

Whose prayer Psalm 71 actually is

There is a prayer in the seventy-first psalm that most of us read as though it were ours. Listen for who is speaking.

Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth.Psalm 71:9

That is not the voice of the daughter on the highway. That is the voice of the woman in the hallway, the one whose knees are going, the one who says she is fine because the alternative is saying the other thing out loud in her own kitchen with the phone against her ear.

Your mother has a prayer in the Bible, written in the first person and prayed from inside her house, not from inside yours. And the psalm is a whole life laid end to end: earlier, the same voice says God has held him up since the womb; later, old age is named again. From the womb to the gray hair, one hand, and never a hand that arrived because somebody two hundred miles away noticed something was wrong.

So hear this at your own table, with the phone face down on the wood: you are not the first one watching her tonight. You are not the second either. His word has carried that exact prayer for three thousand years, and His Spirit has been at work in a hallway you cannot see for far longer than you have been afraid of it.

Now the harder half, the part love does not want to hear.

You were never the wall between your mother and old age. You have not been holding it back by force of attention, and it was never handed to you to try. There is no verse in Psalm 71 about a daughter checking whether the kettle got filled. The psalm is about the hand that was on her from the womb, and there is only one of those. His Spirit has been in that house on every day you were not, and it is written that the holding began before either of you did.

Then there is the sentence itself. I am fine.

I am not going to hand you a way around it. Feel how that would sit in your hand: a form of words, a question shaped so she cannot say fine to it. That is a lever, and a lever used on your own mother is still a lever. Her will is hers, God gave it to her, and it does not transfer to whoever worries hardest.

Which means something else has to be said plainly, because you have been carrying it unsaid for months. Nobody here is going to promise you that she is fine, or promise you what comes next. That is not mine to say and it is not yours to secure. What God has told us is what He is: He does not cast off, and He does not forsake at the end of a strength. That is in His word in the present tense tonight, and His Spirit is the one making it land in a kitchen two hundred miles from hers.

And while we are being plain: ring her doctor if you are frightened. Ask the neighbor with the key to knock on a Wednesday. Book the extra weekend. Those are ordinary kindnesses and nothing in them is faithless. What comes off you tonight is not the caring. It is the surveillance.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it happens at your own table, three and a half hours from that hallway.

You are not going to stop loving her. Nobody is asking that. What comes off you tonight is the job you were never hired for.

Watching is not keeping. Keeping is His, it always has been, and Psalm 71 is the receipt: held from the womb, held at the gray hair, held through every Thursday you never heard about. That is written down, and His Spirit is in that house right now, on the mat with the letter and in the kitchen with the kettle, at the hours when you are two hundred miles away and asleep.

So take the weight off your shoulders. You have permission to put the phone down at night, and it is not permission you earned by being calm about it. It was given to you in Christ, His word says the One who keeps her neither slumbers nor sleeps, and His Spirit is what makes that true in your chest instead of only true on a page.

Then aim the authority where it belongs. Not at her, and never at her will, which is hers and stays hers. The fear in your own chest is the thing in this room you have real authority over, and in the name of Jesus it comes off you tonight. It is written that God has not given you a spirit of fear but of power and love and a sound mind, and His Spirit is not a spirit of fear either.

One thing said quietly, because it belongs here. If any of this has gone further than dread, as far as thoughts of not being here at all, tell one human being tonight. In the United States you can call or text 988, any hour; anywhere else, your local emergency number or crisis line, and one person who will stay with you. That is not weak faith. That is wisdom, and God is entirely in it.

Declare this over yourself

Before you speak, know what you are standing on. None of this is generated by being brave on a Thursday. It is yours in Christ, given to you and never achieved by you, and a frightened week does not take it back any more than a calm week earned it. It is His word in your mouth and His Spirit behind it, never your own nerve. And it stands under His will: you declare what He has already written, and however He answers, the outcome is His and He is good in it. You are not commanding your mother here. You are blessing her and evicting your own fear, and those are two different verbs.

  1. Two hundred miles, you are a distance and not a verdict. You do not get to be the measure of how much I love her, and you have never once been a gap in the hand that has held her since the womb. Psalm 71 was being prayed in her house long before it was ever read in mine.
  2. Guilt that has learned to sound like love, you are not love and you are not my name. In the name of Jesus, get off my Thursday nights and out of my chest, and take the ten past eleven hunt with you. The God who does not cast off in the time of old age has not cast me off either, and I love her tonight with both hands open.
  3. Lord, You have held her since the womb and You are holding her in that hallway right now, while I am two hundred miles away and out of ideas. Your word says You do not forsake when strength fails, and Your Spirit is in that house on all the days I am not. I am writing her name down, and I am lifting my hand off the page.
