Laughter In The Next Room

This message is for the dread that lands in your chest while your children are laughing in the next room

Ten past four on a Saturday, and her hands are in the water.

Through the doorway, on the rug in the front room, the game has reached the stage where the rules have collapsed and nobody minds. The younger one does a voice. It is not even a good voice. The older one goes over sideways with a noise like a kettle, and then they are both gone, the helpless kind that feeds itself and cannot stop.

And her chest drops.

Not a thought. Nothing arrives with words on it. It is what your body does when you come down a dark staircase and put your foot out for a step that is not there. A whole floor of her goes down eight inches and catches, and she is standing at her own sink with her breath gone shallow.

The first reflex is to go and look. Not because anything is wrong. To count them. She does not go. Going would be admitting, and once she starts she knows she will do it again in twenty minutes.

So she stands. And the second thing arrives, and the second thing is worse.

This is the good part.

This is the exact afternoon she asked for. Everyone home. Nobody ill. No letter on the side, no appointment on the calendar, the light gold across the counter, and both her children laughing so hard that one of them will get hiccups. It is the whole of what she prayed for, happening eight feet away through an open door, and she cannot get into it.

Then the search starts, which is the part that undoes her. She goes down the list. The school thing? Cleared up weeks ago. The scan? Clear, they said so on the phone. Her mother? Fine on Tuesday, complaining about the neighbors, which is the surest sign of health there is. Work, money, the car, the roof. Nothing. She checks her own life the way you check the pockets of a coat for keys you know are not in it.

And nothing is the worst answer. A thing with a name can be handled: prayed about, written down, phoned about, sorted. This has no name and no edges, and it turned up uninvited in the middle of the best half hour of her week.

Underneath it, old and worn and never once said out loud to another human being, is the sentence she has carried since she was about nine: it is always this good just before.

Now stop being her.

Because that is your chest, and your doorway, and your good afternoon. Maybe there are no children in it. Maybe it is a partner and a film, or a table of friends, or one ordinary Sunday with nothing wrong in it, and the drop came anyway.

And here is the first thing, before anything else. This is not a failure of faith. Dread that arrives with nothing attached to it is not a verdict on your trust, it is not a warning you have been sent, and it is not a fault in your spirit.

I am also not going to ask you what it is about. Not once, anywhere in this. You do not owe anybody a cause this afternoon, and being unable to produce one is not you failing the exercise. It is what this thing actually is.

Laughter In The Next Room

Who is doing the singing

There is a small book near the end of the Old Testament that is almost entirely warning. Zephaniah is three chapters long and most of it is the day of the Lord, and it is not gentle reading.

And then, in the last chapter, it turns. And in the turn there is a sentence that does not sound like it belongs to the same book.

The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.Zephaniah 3:17

Read where God is standing. In the midst of thee. Not observing from a distance and not waiting at the end of the corridor. In the middle of the room, in the middle of the house, in the middle of the afternoon.

Then read what He is doing, because this is the part almost nobody has been told. He is the one making the noise.

Every picture most of us were handed has us singing and God listening. This verse turns the whole room around. He is glad, He is loud about it, and the gladness is aimed at you. The word Zephaniah reaches for is the word for the noise people make at a wedding, and you are the one it is being made over. That is not a flattering reading of your afternoon. It is the Holy Spirit putting an old and extravagant sentence exactly where your bracing has been standing.

And in the middle of it, one strange quiet clause. He will rest in his love. The old sense of it is that He will be silent in His love: not silent as in absent, silent as in a love that has finished discussing your record. So you are not on trial in the middle of your own good afternoon. What is written says He has gone quiet about all that, and His Spirit is not carrying an audit into a room where the only sound left in God is the glad one.

So take it where you are standing, with your hands in the water and your chest still bracing. You are the one in the next room. That laughing you can hear through the doorway is not the sound of a thing about to be taken from you. It is a small picture of what is going on over your own head, because Zephaniah 3:17 puts a singing God in the middle of your house, and the Holy Spirit is carrying that sentence into a chest that has been braced since about four o'clock.

Look at what that does to the dread. Dread has been quietly assuming a God who is about to present the bill: that this good afternoon is an advance and the payment falls due later. The verse hands you the opposite kind of God entirely. You have a Father who is glad, and His gladness has no invoice attached, because His word says He rejoices over you and He never once wrote a price beside it. His Spirit does not carry a warning into a room where God is singing.

There is no tax on this afternoon. Not one that heaven charges. The good half hour in your front room is not being logged against you, the laughing is not borrowed, and the God who is in the midst of you is not calculating. What is written says He saves and He is glad and He is quiet in His love, and the same Spirit who breathed it through a prophet in a dark century is the one settling it in you now.

And this is worth saying plainly, once. If the bracing has been constant, or if it is getting between you and your own life, tell your doctor, and go and talk to somebody whose actual work is helping with this. That is good and ordinary, it is not a shortage of faith, and nobody in heaven thinks less of a person for getting help.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true in your kitchen this minute, before the bracing lets go, and whether or not it lets go this afternoon.

You are not waiting for the floor to fall. There is no floor scheduled to fall, and there is no invoice coming for a Saturday. Zephaniah 3:17 puts God in the midst of you as a Savior who is glad, and the Holy Spirit is the one pressing that into a chest that has spent years bracing for the opposite.

And nothing is coming that He is not already in. You have not been left to scout the future on your own, out ahead of your family, checking the road for what might be there. That is not your post and it never was. His word puts Him in the middle of the house rather than at the end of the corridor, and His Spirit is not carrying dread into a room where God is singing over you.

So go through the door. Not because you have won anything, and not once you feel better about it. Now, braced, with your hands still wet, into the room where the laughing is, and let the glad God who is in the midst of you have His afternoon with His people.

One more thing, said plainly and only once. If any of this has gone further than dread, if some part of you has begun thinking about not being here, tell one human being today: a doctor, a crisis line where you live, or one person whose number you know without looking. In the United States you can call or text 988. That is the right next thing, and I would ask it of anyone I love.

Declare this over yourself

This is not making yourself feel better. This is speaking from ground that is already under you: the authority to say these words is yours in Christ, given to you and never earned, and no afternoon of bracing takes it back. Zephaniah 3:17 is what you are standing on and the Holy Spirit is the power in it, so say them whether or not your chest agrees, and however He answers today, the outcome is His.

  1. Doorway between me and that laughing, you are not a warning, and you do not get to charge me for this afternoon. Scripture says the Lord my God is in the midst of me and He is glad, so I am standing in the room I am actually in, and the floor is not falling.
  2. Bracing I have carried since I was nine years old, you are not my instinct, and in the name of Jesus you are put out of this house. It is written that He is quiet in His love, and the Holy Spirit is saying so over me at this hour. I am not the one who ruins the good part, and peace is mine in this kitchen now.
  3. Lord, You are in the midst of this house and You are the one singing, and I am the one who gets to stand here and hear it. Your word says You rejoice over me with joy, and Your Spirit is settling that into my chest this minute. So my hands are open, and I am going through that door.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
