The 3AM RoomIsaiah 26:3

The Night Before The Appointment

This message is for the night before the appointment, lying there running results that do not exist yet

He has been awake since ten past three, and the house has never been this loud.

Not loud with sound. The furnace clicked off an hour ago and the road outside has not carried a car since two. Loud the way a room gets loud when there is nothing left in it but a man and the inside of his own head.

There is a glass of water on the nightstand that he poured at midnight and has not touched. There is a small green light on the smoke alarm in the middle of the ceiling that blinks every thirty seconds, and he has counted it, twice, up past sixty, and lost his place both times.

And downstairs on the kitchen counter, under the fruit bowl where he put it so it would stop being the first thing he saw, there is a letter with a time printed on it. Nine forty. Six and a half hours from now.

He has already been to it four times tonight.

That is the part nobody warns you about. He is not lying here dreading the appointment. He is attending it. He has sat in the chair. He has watched a face do the small thing a face does just before it says something careful. He has heard one word, and then he has rewound and heard a kinder one, and then he has gone back to the first, because the first one felt more responsible.

He has called his sister from the parking lot. Twice. Flat on his back in the dark, with his heart going like he had run there.

And here is the quiet madness of it, which he knows, and knowing it does not help at all. Not one of those results exists. Nothing has been taken, nothing has been measured, there is no paper anywhere on this earth tonight with his name at the top and a number underneath it, and he has now read four versions of it and cried at one.

At some point he gets up, because lying still has turned into work, and stands at the window with the curtain against his shoulder, looking at the streetlight and the wet road and the neighbor's trash can that never gets put away, and says out loud, to nobody, I just want to be asleep.

That is you, tonight, under the green light on the ceiling.

And before anything else is said, hear this, because it is the ground the rest of this message stands on. What is happening to you at this hour is not a failure of faith. It is not evidence that you do not trust God. A mind that runs on ahead into a room it has not entered yet is doing what minds have always done, and it is doing it fast tonight because it loves somebody and it is frightened. Nobody in heaven is disappointed in you at ten past three.

The Night Before The Appointment

Tomorrow has no evidence in it yet

There is a line in the prophets that gets printed on cards, and the card carries almost none of the weight of it.

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.Isaiah 26:3

Read what it does not say. It does not say that a quiet mind gets peace, or that peace goes to whoever manages to stop thinking, which is a mercy, because nobody at three in the morning has ever managed that by trying.

The word underneath "stayed" is not the word for a blank mind. It is the word for a thing propped: a beam under a roof, a hand under an elbow, weight resting on something that is not itself. And the peace in that line is doubled in the Hebrew. Peace, peace. The whole of it, and then the whole of it again.

So hear what that means for you, lying there. You are not being asked to empty your head tonight. You are being asked to lean it. Peace is not a thing you achieve at three by trying harder than you tried at two, and Isaiah 26:3 has never once been withdrawn from anybody who leaned. And it is not these sentences doing anything in your room. It is the Holy Spirit, carrying something God has already said, into a house He was in before you woke.

Look again at what your mind has been doing since ten past three, because there is a strange mercy hidden inside it. It has been trying to protect you. Rehearsal feels like preparation, and it is the only thing that resembles control when a person is lying flat in the dark with no information. But there is no result inside a rehearsal. You have been running numbers that do not exist against a face that has not spoken, and there is nothing anywhere in it to set your weight on, which is exactly why the night keeps coming round again. What is written offers you something else to lean on, and the Holy Spirit is holding it out to you at this hour: not a forecast. A Person.

And there is one thing all that rehearsing cannot do, which happens to be the only thing that matters. It cannot get God into that room ahead of you, because He is already standing in it. You have not been sent out to scout tomorrow alone. It is written that He goes before you and does not fail you or forsake you, and His Spirit is not waiting outside nine forty for you to arrive and let Him in.

And go to the appointment. Go rested or go wrecked, but go. Keep the test, take what is on your shelf exactly as your doctor told you, and never change any of it because of something read in the night, this included. Doctors and medicine are not a lower floor than faith. They are provision, and God is entirely inside provision.

Now let the lonely part be named, because it is not really the appointment. It is that everyone in this house is asleep and you are the one holding the night. You have appointed yourself the watch, nobody asked you to, and you cannot stand down from it because standing down feels like not caring. So hear it plainly. You are not what is keeping this family safe tonight. Psalm 127:2 says He gives His beloved sleep, and His Spirit is awake in your room right now, on your side of the bed, doing the watching you have been trying to do.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it does not happen at nine forty. It happens here, on this side of the night, with nothing known and nothing settled.

There is nothing left to solve at ten past three and no fact left to gather, so the only thing on offer in the dark is the thing that was always the point. Leaning. Peace is not waiting for you on the far side of a result. It is already yours, tonight, unresolved: Jesus said He leaves His peace with you and gives you His own, not the way the world gives it, and His word has never been taken back. And it is not your grip that keeps it in the room. It is the Holy Spirit, holding what God has already said, in a place where you cannot even see your own hands.

And tomorrow is not yours to carry at this hour. You have been handed one thing tonight and it is not nine forty. It is the next breath, and then the one behind it. It is written that His mercies are new every morning, which means the mercy for that room has not been issued yet and does not need to be, and His Spirit is not asking you to carry a day God has not opened.

One thing said plainly here, because it matters more than anything else in this message. If the night has gone past dread and into thoughts of not being here at all, tell one human being before morning. In the United States you can call or text 988, at any hour. Anywhere else, your local emergency number or crisis line, and one person who will stay on the phone with you. That is not weak faith. It is wisdom, and God is in it.

Then put your head back down. Nothing has to be fixed before you sleep.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud if your voice will do it, and if it will not, let them be spoken over you and simply agree. The authority in them is not something you have to generate at three in the morning: it is Christ's, and in Christ it is yours, given to you rather than earned, and one bad night does not take it back. The words carry nothing on their own. It is the Holy Spirit who carries what is written, and how tomorrow comes, and when, is His to decide.

  1. Ten past three, you are not the room where tomorrow gets decided. Isaiah says God keeps in perfect peace the mind that leans on Him, so you have no verdict to hand me and no results to read out. I am not attending an appointment that has not opened yet; I am lying down in the keeping of the One who does not sleep.
  2. Feeling that the watch is mine to keep, you have no post in this house and no place on this pillow. In the name of Jesus I put you out, and I put you out on the ground of what is written: He gives His beloved sleep. This house is kept by the One who does not slumber, I am His beloved, and I am going to sleep.
  3. Lord, You are awake in this room and You were awake at two, and at one, and at every hour I have spent doing Your job for You. Your Spirit is in this bed beside me and the peace You give is not the kind the world hands out and takes back. I am putting tomorrow down at Your feet, and I am closing my eyes.
