The vacuum is still running.
She does the upstairs hallway every Friday. Now she has reached the strip of carpet outside the small back bedroom, and she is doing it the way she always does it: standing out in the hallway, leaning in from the waist, running the vacuum along the baseboard as far as her arm will reach, and not one inch past it.
The door is closed. The door has been closed a long time.
She clicks the switch off with her foot and stands there in the sudden quiet, and the quiet is loud.
Here is the whole inventory of that room. A single bed with the mattress bare. Four boxes of Christmas decorations. Her mother's sewing machine, latched in its case. A ceiling bulb that went out in March, which nobody has changed and nobody has mentioned.
That is all of it. Nothing on that list would frighten a child.
And the house has quietly rearranged itself around that door over a year. The ironing board lives behind the couch now. When her sister came in July, she heard herself say at the front door, with the bags still on the step, "the back room is full of boxes right now," and her sister said, "no problem at all," and neither of them looked at the other while they said it.
Nobody in that family has ever named it out loud. They have built a slightly smaller house inside the house they own, and they all know the shape of the missing piece the way a tongue knows a missing tooth.
So she stands there at ten past nine on a Friday night, in her own home, and feels her chest tighten at a closed door six feet away.
That is you, standing in your own hallway holding something you were about to do something with.
Maybe yours is a garage, or a basement, or the far end of a hallway you take at a slightly different speed, or a room that is ordinary at two in the afternoon and is not ordinary after nine. Maybe you have never said it out loud to anybody, because there is no way to say it that does not sound like something.
Let me put one thing down before we go further, and put it down heavily.
This is not a failure of faith. Not yours, and not your family's. Nobody in heaven is disappointed in you at the top of your own stairs. Places hold things. Bodies remember rooms. People who love God deeply have handed a room away and never told anybody, and God has never treated that as a fault. Neither will I.

The doors are the ones being spoken to
Everything I have for you tonight sits inside one line of a psalm.
Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.Psalm 24:7
Read who is being spoken to.
Not the crowd outside the wall. Not the priest. Not the woman in the hallway with the vacuum in her hand. The psalm turns and gives an order to the architecture. It speaks to a doorway.
That is the engine of the verse. A door has no will of its own. It opens for whoever holds the right to come through it, and the only question a door answers is whose house this is.
So hear where that leaves you, because it is nowhere near where you have been standing all year. You are not the one ordered to be brave at that handle. You are the one the King walks past on His way in. That is written into Psalm 24, and it is not this page doing anything to you: it is the Holy Spirit who carries a line like that up a staircase and sets it under your feet.
Notice the order, because a year of dread gets it backward. The King of glory does not wait outside for the gate to find its courage. The command goes out to the door, and He comes in.
Which means the thing you have been dreading is a thing you were never asked to do first. He goes in first. That is not my encouragement, it is the plain sense of the word as it stands, and the same Spirit who breathed that line over a hill full of people is in your hallway at ten past nine.
Something has been trading on an old claim.
Not a claim it holds. A claim it behaves as though it holds, on ground that changed owner long ago, in a house belonging to a woman who belongs to Christ. The cold behind that door is not the landlord and never has been. It has been standing in a room it does not own, and getting away with it for one reason: nobody has ever said anything out loud.
And here is the deed. You have been bought, the house you stand in belongs to Christ before it belongs to you, and the room at the end of that hallway sits inside that house. It is written down, it is not a feeling, and it does not weaken on a Friday night. His Spirit is the one who makes a written thing like that weigh something in an upstairs hallway.
Now hear what I am not saying. I am not going to describe anything to you. There is no lurid picture here and there will not be one. A frightened person does not need a more detailed fear, and God has never made anybody more afraid in order to make them free. The light is the subject; the shadow gets named once so it can be told to go.
And I am not handing you a procedure. There is no correct wording and no step that voids it if you forget. Words are not spells. If any of this starts to feel like a technique that has to be performed correctly, then we have wandered off the ground this message stands on. That door does not open by anybody's method. It opens because of who owns the house.
And nothing here touches your care. If somebody is helping you with this, keep going to them. If there is medication for your sleep or your nerves, keep taking it exactly as prescribed, and never change a dose over anything anybody writes anywhere, including me. That help is provision, and God is entirely inside it.
Let me name the lonely part, because it is not the room. It is the arranging. Home is the one place a person is meant to stop bracing, and a year of building a smaller house inside your own exhausts you in a way nobody who has not lived it understands.
You are not the first person to hand a room away without meaning to. Psalm 24 was sung by people walking uphill toward a gate they had no power to open, and the same Spirit who went in ahead of them has not changed His habits since.
So here is the turn. It happens in a hallway, and it takes about nine seconds.
You are not going to fight your way into that room. There is nothing in there to fight. You are going to stand at the door of a room inside a house that belongs to Christ, as a person who belongs to Christ, and say so out loud.
That is not a ritual and it is not a performance. It is what a household does when it remembers who owns the place: it says the owner's name out loud in the rooms. You are not generating authority at that door frame. Psalm 24 says the everlasting doors lift their heads because the King of glory comes in, and His Spirit is the one who lands an old line like that on a door shut since spring.
That room does not get the end of your hallway. It does not get your Friday nights. It does not get one more year of a family living in a smaller house than the one they were given.
And one plain thing before we go on. If your own thoughts have gone as far as not being here at all, tell one human being today. In the United States, call or text 988 at any hour. Anywhere else, your local emergency number or crisis line, and one person who will come and sit with you. That is wisdom, and God is entirely in it.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud if you can, and if you cannot, let them be spoken over you and simply agree. The authority in them is not yours by nature: it is Christ's, and in Christ it is yours, given to you because you belong to Him. His word is what these lines stand on and His Spirit is what carries them, and how quickly that room changes, and by what road, is His to decide.
- Small back room, you are a room. The word says the everlasting doors lift their heads and the King of glory comes in, and He has never waited in a hallway for somebody to feel ready. In the name of Jesus you do not get the end of this hall, and you do not get one more year of this house.
- Shame that keeps this door a secret, get out of my house in the name of Jesus. The Lord who knocks at a door is the Lord who walks through it, and His Spirit lives in me, so nothing under this roof has to be hidden from my own sister for one more July. Peace, the end of that hallway is yours, and I am handing it back to you tonight.
- Father, You told the everlasting doors to lift their heads and they lifted them, and You never needed my nerve to get through a doorway in Your own house. Your Spirit is in this hallway ahead of me and Your word is under my hand. I am putting a bulb in that ceiling, and the room You bought is a room again.
