Two Years And It Is Still Not Yours

This message is for a flat you have lived in for two years that has never once felt like yours

The stairwell light gives you eleven seconds a landing, and she had learned to take the last flight in nine.

Thursday, ten past seven, two carrier bags cutting into her fingers, and the key you have to lift before it turns. Flat 4B. She got the door open with her elbow the way she had six hundred times, and put the bags down in her own hallway.

Something else went down with them. It always did. She had never found a word for it that did not sound ridiculous said out loud, so she had stopped trying. The hall took her coat. The flat took her evening. Neither gave her anything back.

Two years in March.

In the front room, propped where she had set it the week she moved in, a framed print of a harbor at low tide leaned against the wall, waiting. She had never drilled a hole for it. You do not drill a wall in a place you are only staying in. In the bedroom, two boxes were still taped shut, KITCHEN MISC on the side in her mother's handwriting, and inside them the good mugs she had not used since the last place.

The heating came on at six whether she was in or not, and she had never once called about it.

She ate standing up at the counter. She had a corner of the sofa; the rest of it was where the laundry lived. When people at work asked where she was living, she said, the flat on Ardwick Road. Never my place. Never home.

And she had not had anybody over. Not once in two years, because it means saying come to mine, and she could not make her mouth form those words about that hallway.

At half nine she carried a cup of tea past the harbor print and looked at it the way you look at a thing you have stopped seeing, and thought: I could hang that. And then, in a voice she knew far too well: what for.

That is you.

A different stairwell, a different picture, maybe a house and a mortgage rather than a flat, but you know the evening I mean, because you walk into it and something in you goes down with the bags.

Before anything else, one thing straight to you. What meets you in that doorway is not a failure of faith. It is not evidence that you have gone cold or did not pray properly, or that other people were given something you were not. Nobody is disappointed in you tonight, and least of all God.

Two Years And It Is Still Not Yours

The psalm says dwelling, and it means yours

There is a line in Psalm 91 that people quote over battlefields and hospital wards and almost never over a rented flat on a Thursday.

Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.Psalm 91:9-10

Two words in that sentence carry the whole weight, and they are not the same. Habitation is what you did with God. Dwelling is the place where you sleep, where the heating comes on at six, where the boxes are.

Now read the order of it. It does not say: get the dwelling right, and then God will consider covering it. The covering comes over the dwelling because of what you have already done with the Most High. The direction runs from Him outward to your address, and never once the other way.

So hear this exactly where you are standing. You are not applying for that covering tonight and you are not being assessed for it. It is already over the roof you are under, because the psalm hangs it on your refuge and not on your rent, and what God has written He does not quietly withdraw because a tenancy is short. And it is not these sentences doing anything to your hallway. It is the Holy Spirit, carrying what God already said into a room He was in before you got home.

Now hear what those two verses do not say, because this is where people get hurt. They give you no procedure: no words in a required order, no correct posture, nothing you can perform wrongly and thereby lose what you were given. If your freedom depended on getting something accurate at ten past seven on a Thursday when you are worn out, it would be a technique, and a technique is only ever as strong as the person performing it.

And the two years are not two years of failure. Heaviness in a doorway is not a verdict on your soul. Scripture puts the safety of the dwelling downstream of the refuge, and your refuge has not moved: the same Spirit who sealed you when you first believed has come into 4B with you every evening, including the ones where you ate standing up and did not pray.

This is why shadow is the right word. A shadow is the one thing in a room with no substance of its own: it is cast, and nobody has ever dealt with one by wrestling it. The heaviness in your hallway is real in the sense that you genuinely feel it, and not real in the sense of holding any title to the ground. It has no lease on Ardwick Road.

And let me name the thing under the boxes, gently. The picture is not against the wall because you did not get around to it, but because hanging it would be an act of hope, and hope in a place that has never felt like yours costs something. If you never fully arrive, you can never be asked to leave.

Hear this, then. You are not a person who is only ever staying somewhere. You are a daughter, you are a son, with a permanent address in Christ, and Scripture says you were given the Spirit of adoption and not the spirit of bondage and fear again, in Romans 8:15. So the ache to belong somewhere is not neediness in you. It is accurate. And the same Spirit who taught you to say Father is well able to teach your hands to hang a picture.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn. Take it standing in your own hall.

The heaviness that meets you in that doorway has no right to be there and no lease to show. You are not asking it to go. You are telling it what is already settled, because Psalm 91 has already decided whose covering is over your dwelling, and it is the Holy Spirit who enforces what God wrote, not you and not the volume of your voice. That flat is His, and you are His.

You may feel nothing at all while you read this. That is allowed and it changes nothing. Feeling is the weather. What God has written is the climate, and only one of those changes by the hour.

And you are not waiting to become the kind of person who gets a home. You already are one. The word says you have been brought near and made a member of the household of God, and no landlord and no season has power to revise that. The same Spirit living in you is why an atmosphere moves when you walk into a room, and that was true on every evening you believed you were arriving alone.

If what you carry into that hallway has gone further than heaviness, and there have been evenings when you have thought about not being here, please tell one human being tonight. A doctor, a crisis line where you live, or one person who can come and sit with you. That is not a lack of trust and it is not weakness, and it is exactly what I want for you.

Then, when you are ready, and only because it is already true and never in order to make it true: hang the picture. Not as a spiritual act, and not as a test you could fail, but as somebody who lives there, under a covering His word placed over this dwelling long before tonight, with His Spirit in the room while you look for the drill.

Declare this over yourself

This authority is not something a settled week earns you or a heavy Thursday takes off you. It is yours because you are in Christ, given rather than achieved, and as true at ten past seven in a hallway you do not like as anywhere else on earth. So speak these three and leave the outcome with Him: He may answer in His own way, and it is His Spirit, never the sound of your voice, that carries His word into that hall.

  1. Doorway of this flat, you have had two years of my evenings and you do not get another one. What crosses this threshold crosses under the covering of the Most High, because His word says no evil shall befall me and no plague shall come near my dwelling. This is His address, and so am I.
  2. Lie that tells me I am the kind of person who is only ever staying somewhere, get out of this hallway, in the name of Jesus. I am not camping in my own life and I am not waiting to be told to leave, because the God who is my habitation has never yet put me on notice. Rest lives here now, and tonight I am unpacking.
  3. God, You were my dwelling place long before I ever had this address, and Your Spirit is standing in this hall with me now. You do not sleep, You do not leave, and Your word is the deed this door answers to. So my hand is flat on the frame, the bags are down, and I am staying.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
